Sugar is the second most feared nutrient in the world. They think it will make them fat. Well, there is a reason. When you say sugar you are talking about that white crystallized substance that we add to our dishes when needed. That is not real sugar, that sugar is created thanks to science.
Natural brown (raw) sugar is far more expensive and hard to create than white sugar. There is a big difference between both of them. Let me explain.
Natural brown (raw) sugar. Natural brown sugar is a name for raw sugar which is a brown sugar produced from the first crystallization of cane. Raw sugar is more commonly used, then further processed white sugar. As such “natural brown sugar” is free of additional dyes and chemicals. There is a higher level of inclusion of molasses than brown sugar giving it a higher mineral content.
Why is it healthier ? Natural brown sugar is free of any harmful chemical when processed such as phosphoric acid, formic acid, sulfur dioxide, preservatives, or any flocculants, surfactants, bleaching agents or viscosity modifiers. Raw sugar has 11 calories per 4 grams (1 teaspoon). It is rich on natural minerals and vitamins such as iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus.
As we can see the natural brown sugar is much healthier than white sugar. Does that mean natural sugar doesn’t make you fat ? Not exactly. If you consume any kind of sugar, even the healthiest, at night time you are going to gain fat. There is no problem if you eat brown sugar at day time. Even better if you consume it before your workout.
As you probably already know there are two types of sugar. Glucose and fructose. We already covered “glucose”, lets take a look at fructose.
Fructose, or fruit sugar, is a simple monosaccharide found in many plants. There is a difference between natural sugar and fruit sugar. Your body needs far more energy to break down fruit sugar so it can feed the brain.
Unlike the natural sugar that only has to go trough your kidney, fruit sugar has to travel more until it reaches it’s target, which means you are going to burn calories while your body is dissolving it to fructose.
In other words if you eat a big apple that gives you 100 calories, to be digested, you will need up to 40-50 calories.
Natural and fruit sugar are both better sources of energy than white sugar. So next time instead of eating a chocolate bar or a piece of candy, eat a banana. If you are a teenager tell your mother and father about this, so next time they cook they will use brown sugar instead.
Don’t avoid sugar, sugar is important for your body to function right. Sugar is basically brain food. Just make sure you don’t eat white sugar.
